Catching the steam from a hot drink on a cool morning

Landscape illustration

On a cool morning, a hot drink is one of life's small pleasures. The steam rising from the cup adds a soft, quiet mood to a photograph. It only lasts a short while, so be ready before the drink cools. Pour the drink first, then take a moment to choose where to stand. A little planning helps a lot.

Steam is easiest to see against a dark background. Set the cup in front of a dark wall, a shaded window or a wooden shelf. Against a pale background the wisps almost disappear. Light from the side, from a window or a lamp, makes the steam glow softly. Try moving the cup a little until the wisps catch the light.

Setting the scene around the cup

The cup itself deserves some attention. A plain mug in a calm colour keeps the eye on the steam rather than on the pattern. Wipe away any drips or crumbs from the table before you begin. A folded blanket, an open book or a pair of gloves beside the cup suggests a cosy morning. Keep the extras few, so the picture stays quiet and simple.

Hold the phone steady, because a shaky picture will blur the delicate steam. Rest your elbows on the table or lean against a wall while you take the photograph. Take several pictures in a row, since steam changes shape from moment to moment. One will show a lovely curl that the others miss. Choose your favourite afterwards, when you have time to look properly.

You can also take the photograph from a slightly lower angle. Get close to the height of the table, and the cup begins to look tall and important. The steam then rises against the wall behind it, which gives a clear shape. For a more personal picture, include a hand wrapped around the cup.

Once you have your picture, put the phone down and enjoy the drink. The best moments are the ones you are actually part of. Later, the photograph will remind you of a slow, quiet start to the day. It is a small habit that costs almost nothing and gives a great deal of pleasure.
